Swing Joints Realigned in Portuguese Bend
Since the above-ground water mains and swing joints were installed in the landslide areas, our crews have continued to monitor the infrastructure and adjusted them as needed. In recent weeks, crews were out realigning swing joints and water mains along Ginger Root Lane and Narcissa Drive due to the land movement and following the rainstorms.
Here’s an up-close look at a swing joint on Vanderlip Drive in its originally installed position. You can see how it expanded to accommodate the land movement to prevent leaks or breaks to our water main. Crews realigned this swing joint on February 7, 2025.

Water Main Replacement Project Along Burma Trail Planned
In consultation with the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, we decided to replace the remaining underground water main along the Burma Trail with about 3,000 feet of above-ground main. Design of the new alignment is already completed. Cal Water’s contractor will be clearing the brush, and the City will be completing trail restoration, which is still under review.
All Other Previously Planned Water Main Projects Now Completed
During 2024, our crews installed above-ground water main and swing joints throughout the majority of the Portuguese Bend Community Association, including Vanderlip Drive and Trail; in western Seaview; along portions of Palos Verdes Drive South; and in part of western Portuguese Bend Beach Club.
As we continue to monitor the area, we may plan additional infrastructure upgrades if appropriate. Our crews will also continue monitoring our infrastructure in the landslide areas regularly to check for leaks or other issues, and will make adjustments or repairs as needed.
